A must visit for any train enthusiast, but also interesting for anyone who has an interest in social history or 'days gone by.' The trains really are the centre piece, but there are also lots of items from railway stations displayed around the trains: trolleys with luggage, posters advertising destinations for holidays and many enamelled advertising and information signs. These items create a context for the trains and this helps to bring them to life, it's easy to imagine who would be travelling and what their experience would have been when you see earthenware ginger beer bottles left on a seat or a sack barrow with suitcases and tennis rackets on the platform. The turntable in the second hall is a good reminder that the site of the museum was a working maintenance shed. The archive hall is full of items associated the all aspects of trains, railways and stations. Some are quirky - the packaging from the last microwave cheese burger served - and other show how railway staff were trained or equipped. Everything you could possibly imagine associated with railways can probably be found here. There is almost too much to take in in one visit. The site is wheel chair accessible although one life was out of use when we visited. There is one lot of toilets located near to the entrance, these are modern, clean and well maintained. As a non-train enthusiast engineer, I found plenty to look at and found the hall housing the railway associated items really fascinating. We spent four hours here, but I can imagine those who are truly interested in trains could easily spend a whole day taking it all in. Small children and teenagers may not find much to engage them as the displays are factual with little to interact with or try out. There are cafes in both of the train display halls and they offer a nice choice of snacks and more substantial meals and the prices are not overly expensive. Book ahead as the number of people that can enter is limited by time slots and just turning up may result in a wait before you can enter.

Always a great place to visit when in York. Free entry(donations welcomed) and a great place for any train or history enthusiast! We last visited in 2014 and although not much has changed, a new display of locomotives and a revamp in a few of the halls are a welcome change. A side note, the station hall and gallery are currently shut due to extensive new development so our visit was slightly cut short but the main engine shed is still impressive.

Every boy's dream - and their dad's too! Great selection of locomotives, mainly steam, and lots of other railway-related items too. Good information displays and helpful staff. I particularly enjoyed the 20 minute talk on how a steam engine works, which was free, as was the entry. You just have to book ahead of time, although I think you can just turn up and wait if it's busy.

Moreover, the museum did an exceptional job of incorporating interactive exhibits that engaged visitors of all ages. From simulators that allowed me to experience the thrill of being in the driver's seat to informative and entertaining presentations, there was never a dull moment during my visit. Excellent 3hrs well spent, have not been for years...enjoyed every minute. Good for all the family especially if you like trains and their history. Plenty of memorabilia to see, goes from the start of the railway to today. A good display of Flying Scotsman's history. Possibly 3hrs is not enough to take it all in.

A great experience for adults with so many amazing trains to look at and read about. Could be better for younger children with more for them to do. Perhaps the museum could ask youngsters what they'd like to see / do - here's our son's suggestions 🤣 - Upside down model railway - Mini railway (or individual robot trains) inside which tours around the trains - Mallard experience (simulator) where you can push a button and choose which virtual train you'd like to ride - A big picture of the railways showing where trains are, tunnels etc. - Learn how to drive a train - Big blocks puzzle where you can make the shape of Mallard - Have models of each train going around that train The cafes are pricey, but well stocked ... and you don't pay to get in so we're more than happy to pay a surplus for food to help museums like this keep running their fantastic services.

Overall a good museum, plenty to see here if you've an interest in trains or just need ti keep the family entertained for a couple of hours. In June 22, it was still advisable to book online so as to regulate how crowded it gets. Whilst you can get free tickets on the website, it seems to ask for a donation ticket price of £5/adult. It is a big space and split into three main halls. One an old station layout with a cafe & plenty of seating. Interesting to see the old royal carriages and some eclectic rolling stock. In another hall (short walk), there are a range of nationally important & impressive engines including a Bullet train, The Evening Star and Mallard. There is also a steam engine here with massive sections cut away & painted so you can see how it works. Sadly there is no real meaningful explanation. Indeed explanation sheets/boards are minimal throughout the museum, which kind of lets down the whole experience somewhat. A 3rd hall has a really impressive load of old junk (memorabilia) all catalogued and stacked onto shelves. Again this could have more explanation of what has been collected/displayed. This is after all a National railway museum.

The National Railway Museum provides a really fascinating day out, even if you are not a train fanatic. It contains not only locomotives and carriages showcasing the 200 years of railway history, from the Rocket to the bullet train, but also station signs and equipment (far more interesting than it sounds) model trains, insignia, personal stories and general memorabilia. The section showing royal trains from the Victorian era onwards I found particularly engrossing. It shows what was regarded as essential for travelling royalty but also encapsulates the development of railway carriages from their horse-drawn equivalent to the rather less ornate version we are familiar with. Refreshments are available and there is also a gift shop.

Great for family’s. Old trains or modelling fans would be delighted here. Can touch a lot of old decent trains models here. Food, souvenirs, books. Can stay half of a day. Free entry. Must go if you re in Yorkshire.

First time visiting the museum. It is free entry and there is parking opposite the museum at £10. A good collection of trains inside but mainly for viewing. Probably 1 hour experience. You can get a car/train to the centre of York which is around £3 per person.

The museum has real engine pieces, maintained at the highest standards. If you are a train nerd, it's got a lot of history and information and can even take up a whole day if you go into the nuances. Nevertheless, the visual imagery of the engine parts are nothing alike in the photos that you see. Perfect place to go with your family, as they've got a kids' play section. Toilets well maintained, cafe ✅ It's free and can be booked online.

Super fun and interesting museum, lots of neat things to see and information available. Definitely plan to spend about half a day here and book ahead. When you get there, book tickets for the mini railway, they sell out quick! Food options were mediocre but the cafe in the main station and the Countess of York were awesomely set up. Unfortunately, the steam rides and the hands-on exhibits were closed when we went, but we'll look forward to visiting them in the future. Shockingly good for a free museum and a must-visit for anyone who likes trains!

Enjoyed our visit. Good selection of locomotives and rolling stock on display. Entrance is currently free with boxes for any donations. You are advised to book your entrance ticket online, prior to actually arriving at the museum. Car parking onsite with a disabled parking area closer to the main entrance. At the time of our visit, parking was £10 for all day. A lot of areas currently undergoing refurbishment/redevelopment, but this did not distract too much from the overall experience.

What a wonderful museum! We gladly gave a donation and couldn't believe admission was free for such a large place to visit. There is the Royal trains, steam trains, Euro train and even a carriage over one hundred and seventy years old. You don't have to be an train enthusiast to enjoy this museum. A must see! You can pay £10 to park all day until 18.30, which allows you plenty of time to visit other attractions within walking distance.

It's one of the best Railway Museum I have ever seen. I visited the same museum last year November month and last week this year and to my surprise the whole museum is totally changed. Before it was direct entry but now free entry via a time slot which can be Pre booked on the website. Now the Museum is divided in to multiple parts. It is having very good collection of so many types of Railway engines. Now it is having multiple washrooms, multiple cafes with variety of food items. Good place for kids to spend time in so many toys & mini railway models. It is now have multiple souvenir coin machines also installed. It will take couple of hours to complete the museum now. A very good place to know the full history of Railways.

Really cute street! There are many little fun shops. It’s a shame they don’t have more lights in the evening as it would be nice to see it lit up.

I absolutely loved seeing the old style shops it was very busy long ques for the ghost shop. I would suggest being careful if you have difficulty walking as it's very uneven but a must-see while visiting york!

This is a "must see" street if you are visiting York. A beautiful medieval street, cute small old times shops , pebbled tiny roads , and historic Vibes!! Best to come on weekdays to avoid the crowds.

York has retained so much of its medieval structure that walking into its centre or around its 3 mile long ( 4.8 km ) Ancient city walls is like entering a living museum. Amazing experience! Be aware of no security fences in place in some parts along the pathway. The wall's gates close at dusk. Must be seen. Such a free of charge wonder!

Great place to take a walk , with good weather ! Can't imagine it was built do ling time ago, it was so well maintained ! There are a lot to see on the wall , we could look over the city area from the wall. They have numerous sitting area that visitors could enjoy bathing under the sun.

One of the main places we wanted to visit in York was the City Walls. I had initially thought it was one complete wall, but it's not; it's split into separate sections, so you'd walk a little bit, then climb down the stairs and then cross the road before climbing back up again; most of the walls I did safe, but some sections had no barrier so it felt a little unsafe, especially in wet conditions. Still, otherwise, I'm happy I went to because i got a taste of the history, and there are many facts to educate on what happened in Yorks past. All are free, and you do not need to pay, but I know there are guided tours available, too, but I don't think you'd need that because it's self-explanatory. I wouldn't say this is suitable for people with mobility issues because there are no ramps, only medieval stairs, and some parts do not have a barrier, so there is a high risk of falling.

Really enjoyed being able to see and walk around the old city walls. Not something you’re still able to do in most towns/cities these days. Throughly pleasant for a stroll and gives some nice view points too.

this took us a few hours as we stopped frequently to look at the views. Was a lot of fun. Its around 4km distance to walk. Its not continuous- but easy to pick up when the wall runs out. Highly recommend

The wall is surprisingly well kept for its age, really impressive and well worth visiting. great attraction :)

Amazing history. Love walking the walls. Every time I come back to York, it's on top of the list of things to do. And as an added bonus you get around the city nice and quick.

You MUST walk the ancient walls of York City! Great history, lots of tower stop offs with convenient pubs nearby. Lots of historic views and photo opportunities. A beautiful way to see York. About 2 miles all around. All in the open - adverse weather beware and dress appropriately. Beware of rude people who take pushchairs up there, DESPITE some parts being barely single-file who think everyone (sometimes bottle-necks of 20+ people) should walk backwards or jump onto railings hangibg over edges to accommodate their selfishness! But that's some people for you. Some parts are narrow and barely single file, others have no railings with 8ft open drop sides. Children MUST be supervised! No pushchairs on some parts as it's just too narrow. No dogs. It's not good for people with a fear of heights and drop edges. Not good for elderly and infirm as lots lots of steps. Not disabled accessible.

Our hotel thankfully collected our bags for us upon arrival so we entered the wall straight from the rail station and followed it to the other side of town. It was a pleasant walk, some parts fairly narrow, especially if there was a passing by group or family. Most dangerous parts did have a railing for safety. You do need to climb some steep stairs in some parts, particularly near the gates. I'd recommend a dry day over a wet one for this activity. Definitely do include at least some part of the wall on your visit to York

A great way to see the city. It's a very peaceful walk and so much to see along the way. The walls are so well preserved and well kept.

I had an amazing experience walking around the York city walls. You get a good idea of the the layout of the city. I would suggest you take a walk on the wall first. There are 4 sections of the wall. Each section is known as some gate.

A fabulous trip back in time! Spent about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring this fantastic museum, with so much to see and learn. Hopefully the images show you a good overview of what’s to see. Good for families too Car park nearby, toilets, cafe, and shop. We especially loved the Victorian Street with sounds and even Smell! The museum is in two parts, all easy walking. If your in York, this is a must visit. Tickets also last one year.

Great indoor activity for all ages in the centre of York. It shows the history of York through the ages with real life set up of rooms, shops, streets and prisons. It is split in two halves allowing for a stop off in the middle at the gift shop and cafe situated at the main entrance / exit. 😋 See pictures for further info of what's inside. Limited public parking is available nearby but York's Park & Ride is certainly a great option when up to five can travel up unlimited on the bus for the whole day for only £10. 😮 Definitely recommend spending a few hours here especially on a wet day. 😎👍

Excellent museum telling you the history of York. You can walk through a Victorian street with various rooms of the main street showing the history of the time. The staff are all very knowledgeable and very happy to spend time telling you about how the collection was put together. We spent 2 hours here and could have stayed Longer if we had read more of the many information boards around the displays.

We really enjoyed our visit - Firstly it is great that we can enter again as tickets are valued for a year. There is so much to see that I won't begin to explain but this museum will interest all ages - we chatted to the lovely lady in the fabric shop bought sweets from the sweet shop and paid to watch sooty and sweep play their instruments - we are all children at heart. Loved the 60's and 70's area.

Highly recommend visiting this museum! They have really done a great job on the displays and information about each exhibit. I loved all the interactive areas for the children and all the different activities for adults. Bring 1 pound coins to play with some of the antique machines available to use. This museum is in across the street from Clifford’s tower.

The York Castle Museum was a lovely visit, and we made the booking online, which meant it was straightforward to go to the reception to show our tickets. The tickets are annual, meaning you'd be able to return within a year of initially purchasing your tickets which is great to know. There were many people during our visit, but the queue moved quickly. I especially loved visiting the prison and the indoor city market as it felt like we were transported in time with the retro styling of the shops; you could go in and investigate the history of York and Britain. The cafe was lovely too, and we had a nice cup of tea with a freshly baked cake; this took us around two hours to investigate the place, and it's somewhere I would be willing to return. Remember to bring change since throughout the museum, there are coin-operated machines to enhance your experience in the museum further because the machines demonstrate what life was like back then, from old-fashioned entertainment toys to predicting your future!

This place is wonderful! My husband's tolerance level for museums is about one hour...we were here for almost 3 hours. It covers a wide variety of subjects, from clothing, history, a Victorian street (fantastic) and historical artifacts. We would definitely recommend it.

Museum is well kept and all the notice boards are well maintained and full of interesting facts. The reconstructed street scene is amazing with lots of period shops. The prison has amazing graffiti. Kept my 5 year old entertained for 2 hours so would keep older kids or adults interested for much longer. Toilets are frequent/central and well maintained. Worth the entry fee definitely.

Last visited over ten years ago and it hasn't changed too much in the time from what I remember, but it is still a really good and interesting place to visit. The first world war exhibition was really good and well presented.

Great day out. Much bigger town expected and went on for much longer than expected too. The Victorian Street is amazing, like walking into a set. The staff/actors here were brilliant and very informative and loved giving out great details about the place.

What a gem of a place to visit to learn about the history of York and indeed you also learn about British and Social History. The museum guides you through a series of rooms, streets and shops that are all set up to allow you to see how people used to live and work. The setups include sounds, sights and smells of days long gone. Some of the rooms and spaces are very spooky which adds to the atmosphere. I would recommend taking a bag full of 20p's and 50p's to use in the very old amusement machines; it is something that everyone, young and old should have a go at to see how people used to entertain themselves. I would recommend this place and will go again when I visit York in the future.

A fun day out. Great for adults as well as families. Lots of interesting things on display throughout the ages. I was particularly interested in the temporary exhibition celebrating the rich history of the Gypsy and Traveller Communities (GTC) in York which has proven to be excellent and thought provoking. The museum is accessible with opportunities to explore using different senses.

Fabulous! Wowed what a surprise! We seen this was one of the most visited attractions so here we go! We booked as this can be very busy right in the heart of the stunning beautiful and historic city of york! The train ride surprised us! About 20 minutes take you through a brilliant and very realistic tour of the Viking age! Truly amazing and definitely worth a visit! No parking as it’s right in the Center! But don’t let that put you off as plenty of parking available in York.

This was a fantastic attraction to visit, with stairs or a lift to enter straight away from the suitable reception with nice staff! The glass floor was excavations is wonderful in the first room, where black and white imagery depicts the area in olden days beautifully. What follows on the ride is a fascinating experience, telling stories from back in time and going through the moving settings! The artefacts are incredible too, giving an insight into how people lived way back then.

It's now a ride. Which is good fun and a good experience. If you have small kids you get round it very quickly as they won't look at the displays. We spent about 30mins here. Note that if you are an English heritage member you can get a discount.

Not originally part of my itinerary but so glad I went! Didn't know anything about the place so everything was a pleasant surprise. A bit of a queue but the ride was really well designed and brilliantly showcased the everyday life of the vikings. Definitely something which would appeal to all ages Near the end the exhibits were great as well, especially the detailed analysis of the skeletons

Brilliant. The ride in carriages that take you around the village was very innovative. Great idea. The commentary was excellent. The exhibition once your ride was over was very well structured and very interesting. Not to much of it either so no chance of getting bored with it all. Good few hours and well worth the visit.

We were able to walk in which was great because we didn't pre-book. It was an interesting visit, but it smelled quite badly which was a huge turn off for me. We couldn't wait to get out. The ride was really cool... the people and animals looked so life-like. It could have been a really great outing but we couldn't spend much time looking at everything and just wanted to be out in the fresh air.

I understand why it’s a MUST eat place in York. It’s a very elegant cafe with lots of selection of food from breakfast to brunch and lunch. We arrived at before 10am in the morning and only have to queue for 10 mins. We ordered “ Imperial breakfast set “ and a cream tea set. It was stuffed for two girls. Food is very delicious with no disappointment, service is lovely, the environment is cozy and enjoyable. Toilet is very clean and big too!! If you have the same food and service in London it will cost Double. One of the highlight in York is definitely Betty’s! Now I know why people queue for it, and believe it if you have ever tried the Angelina Cafe in Paris, Betty’s is 500 times way worth the wait and money.

Really great venue for a sophisticated bite to eat. I love the Fat Rascals... but this time I had a Gooey Rascal but I didn't enjoy it unfortunately. Went back the next day and really enjoyed my Fat Rascal... up to the normal high standard, great coffee too.

It didn't take us long time to wait for the seat. The earl tea is one of the greatest that I've tasted in UK. Yet, the scone didn't meet my expectation though it is still good, especially with the cream. As to the Yorkshire egg custard tart, I won't recommend it because personally I prefer crunchy taste. Overall, you can give it a try.

Betty's Tea Room was recommended by a couple of people before my visit to York. I made this Silver Service Tearooms my location of choice for my Christmas Eve Dinner. I queued for around 30 minutes, and the queue was very well managed by a cheerful young lady. There was a separate queue for their shop. As soon as a table for one was available, she came and plucked me from the queue and showed me to my table. All the staff were helpful, friendly, and looked fabulous in their attire. I had a fabulous experience, Jasmine Green Tea, Turkey Escalope, and a Gooey Rascal for afters. I did treat myself to another Gooey Rascal from the shop for my Christmas Day dinner. I was seated on the ground level seating. There was seating downstairs too. The facilities were located downstairs and again did not disappoint. In keeping with the luxury of silver service, they were super clean. The venue was definitely suitable for all the family, including the dog. There are accessible facilities available too. I would definitely recommend this experience. It's absolutely worth queuing for.

Delightful! I came for an afternoon tea while visiting family and the service, food and tea were all superb. Make a reservation online for the upstairs Belmont Room experience! There is piano music and you can order from the gift shop straight from your table. I usually go for an early grey but had the rose tea instead and it was perfection.

This is such a beautiful place to visit for special occasion. We visited as a treat for birthday, the food was lovely, very tasty & more the enough to fill you up. The pianist played Happy Birthday while everyone in the Belmont Room sang to me... it was lovely with an individual cake & candle for me. The best part of Bettys is the service, its something special.. always worth a visit.

I've never been to a Betty's before, but have had cakes from them online, and have always heard good things about their food. We weren't disappointed! We hadn't booked, so did queue outside for half an hour or so (thankfully wasn't raining!) but we didn't mind this. Once inside, we were taken to eat downstairs. We both had the English Breakfast, followed by scones and tea. It was all lovely food, and the staff were all very smiley and friendly. Will definitely visit Betty's again!

A great bakery in York city center. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to dine in, but I bought their cakes for take away (berry cheesecake, strawberry tart, and English cake) and they were amazing. You shouldn't miss it if you are passing by.

A beautiful tearoom located in central York. I was recommended to go here and on my visit to York, managed to stop by. We were in a queue for about 20-30 minutes, but the service was good. It was beautifully decorated inside, and we got some unique blends of tea, along with cake too. Personally, the prices were a little expensive so I would not come here again, but it was an amazing experience and more of a one off thing for me. If I could afford it though, I'd be here all the time!

Group of 4 for afternoon tea in The Belmont room. Faultless staff, knowledgeable and gave recommendations for different teas to try. Only downside is there is NO disabled access for the upstairs rooms, luckily the member of our party who was using a wheelchair (ongoing broken leg issues) was able to go up the stairs with help. I hadn't thought to mention this when I made the booking. In our booking, the drinks and sandwiches were replenishable, but as always, the afternoon tea is quite filling. I've come to Betty's every time I have come to York and always recommend it.

Generous helpings / servings, historical touches - such as the uniform, lovely decor, pleasant aura. Delicious food, tasty dessert, lovely selection of classic cakes and patisseries. Fairly priced, great menu (more options inside).

Booked here for afternoon tea for my husbands 50th. The staff could not have been any more helpful if they tried. Friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The food was lovely and an extra little treat was a small cake brought out with a candle to wish my husband a happy birthday. The cake teamed with the lovely pianist who played “happy birthday” just made our afternoon tea that bit more special. Would highly recommend and will hopefully get the chance to come back 🥪

Lovely decor, food and service. Very good value set menu. Would be 5 stars if I hadn't felt so rushed! Even the food was served super fast and hurried! Is this a french thing? Booked for 7:45. Website gave you options for start and finish time for your booking slot. So did 7:45-9:45, knowing we were going to have 3 courses then possibly a coffee. Got in a few minutes early, but were out by 8:30 easily, and that was having 3 courses, no coffee, as felt too sick to have coffee. Would have liked even just a few minutes between main and dessert, but ended up stuffed and uncomfortable. What's the point in offering start and finish time if just going to rush people, anyway? Would dine here again buy would eat less as not given time to enjoy and digest it.

Lovely experience and the course meals were good value for price!! The highlights were definitely the starters as they just tasted amazing 😋 service was great too The only thing was the crème brûlée, the texture was slightly too creamy and a lot sweeter than I expected (from what I knew should be from my dining experience in France) Despite this it was a really nice experience overall and I enjoyed my meal here :)

Decided to try booking a table last minute for a Thursday night, and managed to get squeezed in around 9pm. Seems like a really popular place, it was full. The service was good, friendly chatty waiters that let us get on with enjoying our meal. And the food itself was excellent. Wonderful starter of scallops with celeriac puree; the pork belly in a nice jus was some of the best I've tried. Hopefully it won't be long before I can come back.

A really good place to eat whatever the occasion. The food has a distinctly French feel and was well cooked and presented. The staff were lovely - runoff their feet as it was Mother’s Day but gave individual attention nonetheless. We all loved it and it’s atmosphere. We will be back and I would certainly recommend to others.

Delicious food, 5/5. Mussels, Duck confit, sticky toffee pudding. Server was also very nice and helpful with my questions on the type of food and checked very meticulously on my allergies to make sure the food is OK. Would eat again!! Cheaper than I expected as well.

Amazing service and delicious food in a cosy restaurant! I love their appetisers, onion soup and mushrooms are amazing! For main courses, we went for mussels and crab&prawn linguine, i love the mussels! A big huge pot definitely fills you up! Brilliant service from the staffs as well!

Amazing French cuisine, delicious food and friendly staff. The set menu had a great variety of choices, you would definitely find something you want. All the dishes we had was so well cooked made me think I was in France. Would surely come back next time I am in York!

Stumbled across this place as late arrival to the city in search of somewhere to eat - how lucky we were to find this place. The food tasted amazing (the best steak I've ever tasted in my life), and it was reasonably priced for the quality we received. Cosy and quaint atmosphere inside and the staff were very friendly. Would definitely recommend!

Loved our night there. We went for my partner’s birthday and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home, which was lovely. The food was very good with sizeable portions for the combo 3 course deal. Loved the mains, had the confit de canard and the pork - both delicious and filling. Will be back again, just gotta save some coins first!!

We just arrived to York yesterday and found this wonderful place by chance and boy was it delightful. What seemed like an unassuming ally turned into a little wonderland. Igor the manager greeted us like he had known us for years, made us feel very welcomed. He gave us the option of sitting inside or outside, we choose outside cause it was such a lovely evening and the ambience was beautiful. The food was splendid, service was great. We definitely recommend and are planning another visit.

Firstly the staff are excellent here. The host got us a table for 8 people after a booking issue and the servers were attentive throughout. The restaurant has a mix of indoor and outdoor seats and the outdoor has heaters and is covered so no need to worry about the weather. We sat inside and the atmosphere was great. One of our party eats gluten free and there is a great menu of gluten free options and was one of the reasons we went here. We went for sharer breads to start which were really nice and like pizzas. For my main I went for the steak skewers which were cooked to my preference and the portion size was perfect. I washed it down with a bottle of Malbec which was 👌Noone on the table had any issues with the mains and the pizzas looked delicious. My dessert was a rum soaked sponge and I would highly recommend it. I would highly recommend this place first for the great service and the food

We had a fabulous anniversary meal, dining in the courtyard area of Lucia's. The food was served promptly and was absolutely gorgeous! Staff were attentive without being intrusive. We even received an anniversary card on our table when staff linked up a voucher present with our booking. Great atmosphere. Thank you Lucia!

Amaazzingggg, very busy which is a good sign! I recommend booking ahead of schedule, food was 10/10, creamy rich flavours and modest portions. Atmosphere 10/10 along with the decor, service on drinks was a bit slow but waiting a bit longer wasn’t too bad in such a nice location

Nice food, but need to be more attentive… Last came here in October and had a really great evening so I was very much looking forward to this. However, it just all felt a bit flat. The waiters were not attentive. Asked for a Coke with no ice and no lemon and it came with both, so sent it back and then had another one with lemon in. Asked for a pint of Peroni which never appeared. Steak came with no steak knife and we were not the only table it’s happened to. It’s just the little things that you expect a high-end restaurant like this to know. Brie and Asparagus starter was quite small for £8 and there really wasn’t much flavour at all. For the main course my partner had rib eye steak which was £20 without any sides whatsoever so he had new potatoes for an extra £5 which seems quite steep. I had a chicken skewer which as you can see from the picture did not have a great deal on it and was slightly overcooked. I completely appreciate everything has gone up in price, but so has the menu and the quality has gone down. I find it a little bit galling that a 10% service charge is automatically added; I think that should be worked for rather than assumed as it was in this case. Hopefully this was just a bad evening and we will have another good meal there at some point. £68 for one starter, two mains and two drinks was definitely not worth it this time

This little hidden gem is exactly that! Stunning decor & the outside seating area is lovely. Waitress even asked if we wanted our heated lamp on!! This restaurant is set back from the main streets and has a very intimate feel to it. The food is gorgeous! The drinks felt a little pricey but it did feel like a luxurious experience so I guess that’s why. The only reason for 4 stars on service is that there were plenty of waiters around and it wasn’t overwhelmingly busy, but we sat without drinks orders being taken for quite some time, and after each course were left with our dirty plates for a long while too. But generally a beautiful experience.

A complete 5* lunchtime dining experience. Faultless from arrival to departure. Restaurant was busy on arrival but we'd booked in advance. Seated indoors in a nice space near to the windows. Beautiful interior. And the ladies toilet facilities are fabulous! They're upstairs, which wasn't an issue for my daughter and I. We ordered cocktails, which were delicious and very pretty. I opted for the 3 course menu with the fixed price. Bruschetta, gnocchi and a chocolate mousse were my choices. Daughter enjoyed a paté, ravioli and shared my dessert. Excellent value for money. Good portion sizes and excellent quality. Staff were attentive throughout. We will definitely be back to this lovely place on our next visit to York.

Food was pretty good, but the saffron risotto was too sour for my taste - probably too much lime juice added. The Sea Bass was very well cooked though and good value on the lunch menu. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

My first time here & can see why it's popular! The service is exceptional, food is tasty & delicious. Menu is varied,offers plenty of choice. Will be going again & recommend a visit especially if u haven't been.

Visited with a friend. The service was great really attentive, maybe slightly over the top but we never without or needed anything. Food was great! We ordered some starters to share which worked really well. The rose and lychee cocktail was really nice! If I’m ever in York again I would like to revisit!

Was craving for fish and chips in york and drakes fish n chips was one of the suggested place. Ordered their regular haddock fish and chips + mushy peas The portion is big ! Couldnt finish all my chips. The fish was cooked perfectly. My friend ordered their tacos and was surprised by their portion as well. Both food were reasonably priced ⭐ Would really recommend this place if you want to have big portion of fish & chips ! Service wise was average as we were seated indoors and it was quite hard to get their waitresses attention. But overall, highly recommended 💯👍

Why can't all fish & chips be cooked in beef dripping? Can really taste the difference. I'd been looking forward to this since arriving in Yorkshire! 😋 yum yum! Also recommend locally made steak pies!

First and foremost… the food was amazing, fantastic haddock quality and light batter. Positions were generous and chips were lovely. Service unfortunately let the experience down a bit. Meal prices are very reasonable as well.

Well...I've just got to say it....Drake's is THE best fish and chips that I've ever had!!! And that's saying a lot! Chips...perfect. Fish...full of flavour and beautifully cooked. Fish batter...light and crunchy. No grease. Curry sauce...fantastic! Simply the best!

If you want fish and chips in York, this is the place. Plenty on the menu to choose from, lovely restaurant/seating area as well as take away. Food was cooked to perfection. Staff were lovely. They serve beer as well. A fine establishment and will come here again.

Me and my grandma came in today as we visited York for the third time. We wanted to try this place for the first time around dinner time and we were unsure what would happen. We got introduced by two women who were super nice and we felt loved as we got seated as a table of two. We ordered two regular haddock and chips which was average time to cook and to be served. The atmosphere and scenery was beautiful and the food was AMAZING! The utensils are clean and the tables are also so organised for your seating. The staff care so much and ask if you’re okay and if you’re having any problems. Honestly, we are coming here again because the respect is spot on. Needs more notice!

The temple of hearty food in York, this institution is so popular due to its immensely meticulous service and divinely fresh fare. The promisingly golden, fluffy interiors of the chips offer an impressive flavour while the Haddock was spellbinding as the crunchy batter melts with the fresh juices of the fish. Bakery sliced bread makes an absolute stupefyingly deluxe sandwich. Lesson for all visitors, don’t wait, don’t postpone, don’t put on hold, dine here and you’re stomach will be in heaven.

Superb fish and chips in the centre of York. The best you will find in this city. Worth any wait in a queue. Good portions and reasonable price.

Went here on a recommendation of a friend. Was seated pretty quickly to say how busy it was. Staff were really lovely. The food took 30 mins to come which I assume meant it was cooked fresh. The food was delicious when it arrived and plenty of food on a regular haddock and chips. The only thing was there was a door to a cellar storage or something where we were sat and when it was opened there was a horrible smell.

After looking at the menu outside myself and my son decided to give it ago. My son ordered the chicken burger, chips and slaw. I ordered the mini fish and chips. This arrived within the space of 15 mins. The fish and chips were devine. Its the best fish I've had in a while. Proper fish and chips. My son really enjoyed his chicken burger to. Also had two apple juices. Everything came to £29 which was acceptable. The waiting staff were polite and came back to the table to make sure everything was to our liking. We will definitely be going back in the next few weeks.

Beautiful food genuinely better than any restaurant I have been to in Venice or Rome if your In York and you like Italian you must visit

Fabulous little restaurant with so many attentive, friendly staff. Made it reservation late but received help over the phone with parking options nearby, and nothing was too much trouble. Meals were fresh, filling, and delicious. We weren't waiting around for ever to be served either. Heartily recommend Little Italy for any occasion. Thank you.

Awesome If you like a freshly made italian sandwich so this place is a heaven! l didn't know what to order at first and the lady in a shop just so helpful and nice. I highly recommend this place Tips Grab a nice sandwich and sitting at a bench around a corner.

Let's keep this simple. The food is authentic, fresh and delicious. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. My dad and I separately have been to Italy and try to eat at good local spots when we go. We both felt that this was one of the top Italian restaurants we've ever been to. Seriously super good, make a reservation!
