Matera

Italy’s picturesque ‘Capital of Culture’ for 2019, Matera is a World Heritage Site. This southern Italian city is unique as it’s remained relatively unchanged since the Middle Ages and is one of the best-preserved examples of a traditional Mediterranean hilltown. A unique characteristic of the city is its "sassi" (stone houses), which are striking to view and can be reached by foot or by funicular.
