It is a place where one can find peace in midst of Marseille crowd. A place to stay calm after roaming around the city. The view of the city from here is just fantastic. To reach here, I’d suggest to have a walk from vieux port. It’ll be bit of a hiking like and then stairs however it worth because as one climbs up, the view on their back keeps growing into something superb. Though, there are buses and touristic train available to reach there. You can also take your own car. There’s a parking for them. The sunset view is worth viewing from here.

Amazing views! Bring water or money to buy it though. After the stairs you will be thirsty. A little scary when the winds pick up but truly an amazing place to see old Marseille.

Being located in a very high place, you can have an amazing view over all of Marseille. The church is very beautiful and I would recommend to go there to see the sunset. The church does close around 6pm, but then you can still go down the stairs and watch the sunset there. People told us is wasn't worth walking up there because it took them around 1h climbing and they had to walk on the road not even a nice path, we took the bus 60 from the port which costs 2€ and it takes around 15min. To walk down, we did go by walking because it was only 23min and we didn't have to climb.

Absolutely stunning basilica - and a must-see in Marseille. I first visited on the Saturday, but because of high winds the entrance to the basilica was closed. I was told I could enter via the crypt, but there was a mass happening and nobody was allowed to enter either the crypt or the basilica. Luckily I was able to return on Monday (thought I’d give Sunday a miss as there was only a half hour window to visit at 9am due to masses being held throughout the day). I’m so glad I had the time to come back, as the basilica is absolutely stunning. The views from outside are pretty gorgeous too. Entrance is free, but I’d recommend paying 1€ for the pamphlet at reception - which points out some interesting facts and items to view. Also, the walk up is hard going - even for the fittest of walkers. I’ve climbed Ben Nevis, so I know what I’m talking about! If the weather is cool then go for it, but when it’s hot…no thanks! You can get the No.60 bus from Vieux-Port (I’d recommend getting on there as the bus does get packed pretty quickly). The journey takes around 10-15 minutes by bus and drops you off directly outside the basilica. It costs 2€, and if by chance you can’t get in because of high winds (or mass) it covers the cost of the trip back down - as long as it’s within an hour of purchase.

Contrary to what visitors might think, Notre Dame de la Garde is not a cathedral but a basilica. Really easy to get to by bus and worth seeing - inside and outside. The view is simply stunning. Beware of pickpockets. But no more dangerous than any other site.This monument of Marseille is located on the highest hill near the Old Port, at an altitude of 150 metres.

Great place to visit .you need a couple of hrs to see it all .plenty of steps to climb .we got the little train up to notre dame .you can take as long as you like walking around .and get a much later train down .there's the sightseeing tour bus that also goes up there .bur much more expensive. And it's not really worth it . Enjoy your visit.we did .

A Catholic basilica with a beautiful Roman/Byzantine architectural style. Inside there were many statues; golden Mary was the most stunning. There was also an outdoor area, giving you a view of the city.

Pretty cool little place. We walked up from the port, which was quite a walk, but pretty cool to see the city that way. Safe area to walk around in. The view from there was unique and made it a great stop. The boats everywhere in the church was also really unique and interesting. I definitely wouldn’t pay a tour guide if any kind and was glad that admission was free. They charge you to use the restrooms, which was wild to me but maybe that’s normal in this area.

We were staying on the other side of the marina and decided to take a day trip. The hills and stairs are no joke in near 100 degree weather. I got sunburned and we stopped for a quick cafe when we made it up the first round of hill. The walk/hike was WELL worth it the basilique is beautiful as are the views... I highly recommend the trek if you are up for it... I believe there is also a bus that runs every 20 minutes...

The location of the basilica is simply breathtaking, situated atop a hill overlooking the city of Marseille. The panoramic views it offers are absolutely stunning, providing a captivating perspective of the cityscape, the harbor, and the surrounding coastline. The basilica's architecture is equally remarkable. Its ornate design, featuring a combination of Romanesque and Byzantine elements, adds to its charm and grandeur. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and beautiful mosaics inside the basilica create a truly great atmosphere.

The highlight of the city. It’s not too much of walk to, a little hilly but an enjoyable walk. Amazing views of the city. There also parts of the structure you can pay your respects to the fallen so feels a little nostalgic too. Well worth the visit.

Worth the climb for the spectacular views alone. Fortunately, there are stopping points on the way up the 267 steps. If you're really struggling, you can take a lift from the crypt to the chapel. Once inside, you will be impressed by the beautiful art. There is also a shop to buy your souvenirs.

Really Great museum with a lot of interesting and different exhibits. The curation is quite different to most museums I have visited and I found the approach very engaging. The architecture and the buildings themselves are also well worth seeing. Tickets are reasonable for the experience. Bear in mind you don't need to buy a ticket to just visit and see the buildings and really through the whole complex.

Very interesting and unusual building. It’s free to discover, many entrances and exits. The exhibition are changing and very interesting. Most of the exhibition explanations are available in French and in English. It’s located at a wonderful spot, close to the harbour and easy to access.

What a fantastic museum... much more than a museum: an architectural masterpiece, a meeting place, a botanical garden, a playground...is it not enough? No, not enough in one day, that's for sure!

Its very nice! It was surprisingly free for almost the entire thing! It has a cool food area and an area to go beside the water! There are some secret doors and tunnels too to explore! And the views are really nice!

This was a very different place than I imagined, and while I enjoyed it, I can see that the experience isn't for everyone. This is a combination of history and art that I haven't seen before. Coming from the port area, you will walk through the restored old fort and learn about the history of it as well as Marseille through interesting short videos and audio guide you can listen to on your phone. You will walk through little gardens highlighting important plants, both native and imported. In contrast, you will then walk across a high bridge into a huge, modern building that houses modern art as well as a informative look at the history of the Mediterranean through art, artifacts, maps, and more, again with audio guide accessible by phone. The juxtaposition of all these contrasts -- modern vs ancient, black steel vs stone, high tech displays in tiny rooms in the fort -- seemed odd at first. However, then I realized it is just like the Mediterranean itself: a mix of old vs new in layer upon layer that makes European cities charming and fascinating, at least to this American. If you go, realize that there is not a clear path through (likely intentionally). You have to wander and explore and discover, which we enjoyed. We spent four hours there, and didn't feel like we saw everything. If you don't speak French, you will still have a good experience as most of the audio content and many signs are in English. If you also have the Google Translate app on your phone and use it to translate the French-only signs, you will have a better experience. There is a cafe with sandwiches and salads on the bottom floor, prices about 10€. The top-floor outdoor cafe has some dishes for about 15€, and the formal restaurant ranged from 20-50€. There are lots of WCs, but not a lot of seating. On the first Sunday of each month, entry is free! On one hand, I wish there had been more about history, and less art. On the other, I couldn't have absorbed much more in one day. Net, I enjoyed it and am glad I did it, but don't think I would do it a second time unless the content changed.

Expositions extremely well designed and displayed in an engaging and easy to consume way with different types of media. The ancient part of Fort St Jean is also well designed with many outdoor spaces to admire the city. I particularly love the thought they put into the design of the icons and signs!

The Mucem space is fantastic, and the layout is quite interesting. We saw an exhibit on the Romani, which was very enlightening. We wish it was more approachable by including more opportunities to understand in English. We found ourselves looking up words much of the time. Upon entering, the guard asked us to carry our day-bags in front, not on our backs, and not to take photos. After seeing the exhibit, I believe photos should be encouraged so that the message of the plight of the Romani could be better disseminated. We also saw an exhibit on the history of the Mediterranean, which didn't teach us anything really knew, and we are no experts. There were a couple more exhibits that we missed because they were not well marked, and we found ourselves wandering away.

Get your camera ready to capture postcard pictures of the Basilica and the Mediterranean Sea. I booked the ticket online the day before. I entered from Quay du Port, then followed the walkway surrounding Ford Saint John. Such a view of the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, following the steel beam, I got to the 3rd floor of the museum. I was given a sticker after my ticket had been scanned by the staff. The sticker enabled me to visit any of the exhibitions. The temporary Fashion Folklore exhibition really surprised me. I had never seen so many masterpieces of famous couturiers and haute couture houses all in one place - nearly 300 pieces from the Mucem's collections and loans from French and foreign museums. The Saint Laurent Church exit will lead you to a viewing terrace where you could get the best/unrestricted view of the Basilica. You need to go down from the viewing terrace if you want to catch a bus e.g. #60 can take you all the way up to the Basilica.

The architecture and the style of the museum are really unique, especially you have to go to the rooftop (it’s fully free) and take a look around the sea. However the exhibitions itself to me were not that good. The permanent exhibition is just a lot of photos of different cities and some of the temporary ones were also nothing special. The only one I enjoyed was about fashion as they had some beautiful pieces of clothing. In the end I suggest taking a free walk around the roof and the castle without paying for exhibitions.

Very beautiful place and the view is amazing. I recommend a hiking shoes as in some areas the sand is a bit slippery I twisted my leg in there and it was difficult to climb down after.

A great place to have different types of activities and levels of difficulties. Hiking, climbing, swimming in the sea, trail running. The views are gorgeous and the stones are magnificent. I would recommend hiking shoes depending on the train you chose. Bring water as there is no place to get some once you start.

If one has to imagine how the heaven looks like, then they should visit Les Calanques. It’s nothing less heavenly. Picturesque beaches, colourful waters, numerous possibilities of activities one can do and it feels like that’s the real life to live for. The best place for scuba, swim and for sunbathing. Hiking, kayaking or any activities related to water and mountainside can be performed. The colour of water varies because of Mediterranean specific sea plants. They are well preserved and that’s what make this place worth visiting. One can reach there by hiking or by taking a ferry from Marseille vieux port. Just to visit all the calanques beaches one can take integral tour of the calanques by ferry which will Cost you around 32€ per person for the duration of 3h15. Don’t forget to take sunglasses and a cap because of the sun. Best time to visit in April.

A short drive or bus ride from Marseille, great hiking and walking trails with magnificent views of the Mediterranean throughout. Prepare for crowds in weekends, even in the winter months.

Argh. The Calanques were beautiful and d’en Vau beach was wonderful swimming. D’en Vau beach was mobbed by instagrammers, kayakers, climbers and even has boats bringing tourists by sea. It did ruin it quite a bit. But what ruined the visit the most was that our car was smashed into while we left it in the car park. When we came back from our hike to d’en vau all the cars in the car park had the back windows smashed. The local police weren’t remotely surprised. Our air bnb host shrugged and said ‘well it’s Marseille’. The police report was a nightmare. They didn’t speak a word of English and had no official translation service. It’s not really worth it for all that stress

The Parc National des Calanques in Marseille is stunning, but my visit was marred by road closures that made access difficult. Views were still breathtaking, but plan ahead for any closures.

A wonderful experience not to be missed if you're visiting Marseille. Winter months are not as busy on the trails and the light is magical.

This is amazing wild place! Mountains and the sea! If you love nature - must visit!

Paradise on earth....but very dangerous hiking trails if you underestimate the danger. The hiking is also much longer than said on the internet. To go from Port Miou to En vau it is 3 hours and not 1h30. There are three ways to get to En vau. The easiest and the one I would advise if you have children younger then 15 is the one that starts at the route the gineste. The hardest route is the " panoramic route". If you go for the first time, stay close to people that already know the trail. It is way too easy to get lost. And when you get lost you sometimes will have to take some very dangerous decisions to get back on track. I repeat do not underestimate the danger. I am an adventurous man, athletic and not afraid of anything...but I am amazed that there aren't any dead tourists every summer..... Take a lot of water with you. Go as early as you possibly can. Don't leave the beach too late because if you leave at 8 in the evening you won't get out in time before dark. Install the application " mes calanques"... An amazing app. Stay safe. And don't smoke there nor on the beaches... They will give you fines that will hurt your wallet. They had a lot of forest fires.. and clean up behind you. And when you leave the beach and you see some filth from someone that didn't, then be kind and take it with you. By the way...the water of calanques d'en vau is extremely cold. Some advise: when you arrive at the beach find yourself a spot on the left side of the beach because that way you'll have 90 minutes of sun more then the people on the right side of the beach. Best advice : rent a kayak. You'll be there in 1 hour. Stay safe.

The sand colour is a bit dark and I'm a little reticent to bring my children there for that reason. But it's close to home. Avoid going there after heavy rain.

We went there for eating Bouillabaisse. The portion were big but lack of refined taste (maybe this is how Bouillabaisse should taste). The service was good but too quick for a restaurant in this category leaving us little time to enjoy the meal and view.

Perfect! Thanks to the chef for accepting us so late. We had the grilled mussels with fried polenta, a veg salade and the octopus.

This restaurant was recommended as the best place for bouillabaisse and it did not disappoint. Despite being a tourist and knowing little French, they were welcoming and accommodating. For those that are not familiar, they first bring out the fish that is prepared as part of the dish. Our waiter described at least 5 different types of fish. The "first course" is the bouillabaisse soup that is accompanied by bread, garlic, aioli, and cheese. You are to rub the garlic on the bread, spread with aioli and place in the soup. You can add cheese but our waiter says he prefers without it. The bread soaks up the broth and it is delightful with the creamy aioli. The garlicky flavors cut through the richness. After you've filled up on soup they bring out the fish! In the corner we could see the waiter preparing the fish for us. It comes with a little more broth and potatoes. Each fish was delicious and varied in texture and flavor. The table next to us were locals and teased us about taking pictures of the food because they wanted to keep the restaurant a secret. The other dishes that came out of the kitchen looked delightful; however, this review is specific to bouillabaisse. Every table was lively and happy. We were treated to complimentary limoncello at the end of the meal and it felt special to be a guest. The views of the water were gorgeous and there was a very fun and inviting atmosphere. Parking along the street is tight so we parked at the top of the hill and walked down.

The restaurant is lovely, it was really busy when we arrived. Its mostly booking reservations, but they were nice enough to give us someone's table until we arrived. It was expensive enough and they put bread basket on your table which cost €10. We ordered the lasagna, it was made with ricotta cheese which we were not expecting. Would order something else if I was to go again.

If you are going to spend time in Marseille please take time to visit this lovely restaurant. The entire staff is welcoming, knowledgeable, attentive, and engaging. As we settled in they brought out small bites to eat that built anticipation of what would come next. The menu was well curated and honestly I don’t think there would be a single plate that would disappoint. While food and wine make for a great pairing the ambiance heightened the overall experience. The view was stunning as we reserved a table for 7:30. This is a table of excellence that you will never regret. If we had to do it all over again I’d come right back to this lovely place. Warm welcome fron the staffs, They are very friendly. The staffs have knowledge in their own menu, so they can recommended us very well :) The taste of food is quiet strange but delicious. Most important, the restaurant is very beautiful with the panaroma view.

Fantastic view. Excellent service. Food is very good but we thought the various accompanying sauces were too salty and/or sour and ended up covering the flavour of the main ingredients. All in all, an amazing experience!

Went here for dinner and had a delicious meal and a scenic view. Great selection of some local wines from the region, and the dishes were delightful. It's a bit on the pricey side but if you are looking for a nice meal to bookend your visit, this would be a great place to experience.

An absolute gem of a place right on the coast. Place is overlooking the bay with islands on the horizon and rocky swimming spots right below. Sailing boats passing by only add to already magical atmosphere. Food was delicious. vibrant well assembled presentation helps. Worth mentioning attentive and hospital staff that added to already perfect lunch.

The location of the restaurant is great and the views are even better. We arrived and were able to see the sunset directly in full view in front of the restaurant. Food was really good, one of the best octopus I've had. Service is very friendly too. Had a good time and would recommend to others :)

Such a lovely evening. From the moment we booked we felt that we were being taken care of. I mentioned it was going to be my birthday and a table by the window was reserved for us, with a beautiful view of the sun setting. We were recommended delicious wine, not the most expensive on the menu and delicious dishes, again not necessarily the most expensive. Although I did opt for the bouillabaisse, which lived up to my expectations. All the dishes were beautifully presented, with delicate flavours and each one described and explained in detail. The final cherry on the icing was the lovely waitresses who sang Happy Birthday to me as they presented me with my dessert. A friendly, non pretentious place and a wonderful experience. Everything was wonderful! The view was spectacular, the ambiance and music was perfect. The service was friendly and efficient, not too much nor too little. And the food! I think the swordfish with the stuffed zucchini flowers was one of the most playful, prettiest, delicious dishes I’ve had in a restaurant. Thank you for a lovely evening!

This spot is in the more touristy part of the vieux port Area. The wine and food was tasty! There are not many gluten-free options. We ordered the beef tartare (which as really good). The tuna tartare is the safest thing to order. I think the cuttlefish and baked mussels are breaded with panko, but the waiter couldn’t confirm this when I asked. The staff are friendly and the bathrooms are clean. Selena was our waitress and super sweet!

Excellent food and wonderful friendly service by Margot. One of the best meals we have had in France. We are back in Marseille in October and will definitely come back here. Highly recommended 👌

Incredibly tasty food in a nice setting. I was blown away by the gnocchi gratin. The service was superb. We hardly knew any French but they were accommodating and helpful. Very affordable as well

We had a reservation for 9pm. It took 25 minutes to order even water. Apart from that no one has informed us about unavailable items from the Menu so we had to choose different mains last minute. Our mains arrived one hour after ordering (1h 25 minutes after arrival). Cordon Bleu was unfortunately burned and not pleasant to eat. No apology or any interest from the staff even though we made it very clear we’re not satisfied with the delay. 98€ for very bad experience. Do not recommend.

I liked the food at this place. It seemed good quality at an acceptable price. I wanted to try something from Marseille but I think this was not the best place for that, so I picked up something from the menu. Everything seemed nice and in the end I ordered sea bream and a glass of rosé wine. The food was really nice. I then ordered a tiramisu made of banana, Nutella and speculos, but this was not a great idea. I did not enjoyed it much. The taste was ok, but the cream was too thick, too heavy. Nothing like a nice tiramisu. The atmosphere was nice thanks to the singer from the restaurant nearby. The staff was kind. I recommend it.

Every dish we ate was a piece of art. Excellent quality ingredients and fabulous combination of tastes. Nice setting and helpful waiters. Couldn't recommend more! Try the salmon mango steak tartare, you won't regret!

I had lamb shank in this restaurant, and it was very well made. The waiter was also able to interact with us in English. However, I feel that the restaurant was understaffed as the waiter that took our order, serves us, and also manages the bills alone. He seems to be the only one on the ground.

Very nice place with a very nice and kind waiter and chef (same person). The food was very good, tasty, flavourful and absolutely recommended. It is small and cozy with 7 tables. A reservation is probably needed, but we came on a friday at noon and we didn't have any problems having lunch. The menu (starter or dessert and main plate for 18,9€). The menu or "formule" (as they call it) includes purified water and some bread. Ah, nice knives!!

Very small place run by one person. No kidding...he is chef, waiter, host, and dishwasher. You can tell he has a passion for providing his customers with quality dishes in a simple setting. The choices are very limited, but we liked what was on offer the day we dined there. It is a must to make reservations early.

Book in advance somehow if not be prepared to wait! I got the 8.30pm slot and had the best meal of my life!! Food was delicious and fresh. The chef does everything himself from explaining the menu (which is written in french but he explained everything patiently in english), taking orders, serving the food and drinks, and the bill at the end. Please be patient as he has to handle everyone in his 16 pax place. Will definitely come back to eat here again when i come back to Marseille!!

Cozy little place, the food is very well prepared and you can taste the freshness of the ingredients. The guy that runs the place is very nice and keep attention to every detail also in the service.

MUST TRY IN MARSEILLE. We randomly walked into this superb restaurant just by the Old Port. It is located on a quiet street. The bouillabaisse is really traditional and authentic. Excellent service, and lovely atmosphere.

Amazing food and in a quiet romantic setting. The flavors and presentation are incredible. I ordered the discovery menu of 6 dishes for only 65 euros, such a good price for such unforgettable experience.

Quiet restaurant a little out of the way of the main street. Food was very good; we had the white fish of the day which was fresh, cooked perfectly, and paired well with the flavours of the sides. Keep in mind that portions are small if you are looking for a large meal but this wont be a problem if ordering multiple courses. Unfortunately the set menu is only at certain times - I think you must be there at early opening time!

Very nice restaurant hidden in the city near the docks. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food is great. Drinks aren’t the best (aperatifs), but wine is nice. No matching wines, but that’s probably not a thing in France. Wines go per bottle and not everything we wanted was in stock.

I tried the Bouillabaisse menu, and was a bit disappointed. Only the Tarte and dessert were delicious. I love fish soups, but this one was not my case. It tasted like fish soup from the supermarket with added fish stripes...
