Bologna is just awesome all around. The tourist office offers a walking tour that is perfect with multi-lingual guides who are extremely knowledgeable and communicative. Even in the rain it is stupendous. Don't forget to take photos at the end of the tour, especially at the street market. And I recommend the night when they light it all up. Spectacular!

This is a beautiful town square where people come and sit for a quiet drink or a meal at one of the restaurants. A fantastic place to sit with a cold drink and just watch the world go by.

Good: Beautiful place , nice place to walk . Very well maintained considering how old this landmark is. It doesn’t feel like a few hundred years old :) Bad: Only visit if you are interested in monuments, ancient architecture, or culture :)

Visited many times through out my 3 day stay. Amazing facade and architecture. Good coffee shops. But it could use more music, events, and good seating options.

If you like this review give it a 👍 In the heart of the old town. Cosy but not the most romantic or nicest old town squares I've been to. A lot of guys who are trying to sell you junk stuff. Prices are pretty high. (€7 for a bottle of non alcoholic beer, €7 for a glass of wine).

Everytime I'm visiting this square I feel something of magic. You can see younger or old people here, tourists and students. Bologna is a wonderful town with a lot of beautiful places!

The main - central - square of Bologna with several shops, restaurants,and historical architecture around it. It's very spectacular, and normally full of people and good vibes. I felt here like a time traveller who just appeared in the middle of a magnificent and powerful metropolitan city

Great piazza with historical buildings wherever you turn. They had a summer cinema set us that was free for anyone every evening. It qas amazing to watch while surrounded by those amazing buildings. Can't believe that's normal for the people that actually live there

Just loved the square. Lively city square surrounded by classical buildings and architecture. Roads leading off from square alive with restaurants and cafes/bars. The whole area full of locals and tourists just having a good time. My only concern was that our visit was in the middle of a extraordinary heat spell far hotter than normal. Plan to return later in year when things cool down a little.

As for walking upstairs the towers, I strongly recommend good sport ĺshoes, be patient because it is tiring going upstairs and definitely book tickets in advance because people enter in groups, so you should choose the time of your visit in advance. Someone should definitely go upstairs because the view is fantastic as well as the inside of the tower.

It is worth to climb the almost 500 steps to the top, however the way up could become a bit of a “scary” experience for some. The views from the top are spectacular, it is very interesting to discover that it is a hollow shell of a height of 100 meters. Beautiful landmark.

Pretty affordable experience in Bologna with good views of the city. I definitely like their reservation system. Didn't feel crowded and didn't have to wait but you do need to book in advance (we were able to book the day of a few hours before). Some of the stairs didn't feel like they were a perfect 90 degrees and some were differently spaced than others, so do use caution. The walk up also seemed much quicker than we thought it would be.

Of all the towers I climbed… this was my favourite! The €5 entrance fee is a bargain. They have a ticket office at the bottom. It’s really cool the way everything is creaking and medieval.. I’m pretty sure the tower leans in one direction. It’s kinda scary when you look down from the top. Totally totally worth €5 and the effort to climb it. Don’t miss this!

5 stars for the view from the top, also the online ticketing service comes in handy since you don’t have to wait in line. The support beams for the stairs inside don’t look very..supportive though especially when there are dozens of people on them on the same time. Visits are every 15m and groups need to wait each other to pass between floors.

Important tips - be prepared to walk, wear walking shoes - if you intend to climb the tower , wear suitable shoes (non-slip types), shirts and maybe some wipes cause you will be sweating - try to visit in Sundays when they close the area off to cars and bikes, so you can walk on the main streets - if you visit during weekdays , careful of cars and bikes Good: - really beautiful - do visit on Sunday , as they close the roads to cars . So you can walk on the road without worrying about cars or bikes Bad: - try to visit during off peak, as there could be too many tourist during peak seasons

The size of this cathedral is really impressive. It has it own character even if it’s exterior is not complete. What caught our attention was some weird frescoes with mystical creatures and the meridian line which is the longest functioning in the world that can show the months etc. Also there is a Foucault’s pendulum!! Very interesting church overall, a must visit when in Bologna!!

Definitely a must see in Bologna. If you go early in the morning you can enjoy the exterior view with almost no one in the main square. Entering is free although some of the side art works on a pay per view at the end of the day (you need to pay to light it up and enjoy it).

It was an impressive basilica. However, as some have mentioned they enforce a strict dress code for women. I don’t agree with this but can respect it however, this basilica seemed to have more of a subjective dress code and were not polite to people who didn’t follow their dress code. Also, the staff inside of the basilica shouted at some tourists. It did not feel like a friendly place to be. This is not necessary and doesn’t feel right being a spiritual place.

An absolutely massive Gothic basilica situated in the heart of Bologna. Unfortunately it was never finished and it will never be finished, at least according to 2022/2023 knowledge. The exterior is impressive and you can really see the overall progress that was made during the construction and where the builders stopped. The interior is incredibly large and contains a vast array of sculptures, paintings, icons, relics, burial grounds, etc. There are sometimes art expos inside. More impressive is the fact that this basilica also houses Cassini's Meridian Line, which is considered one of the world's largest astronomical instruments, dating since 1655.

Work began on it in 1390, but it was never finished, and still today its main facade remains incomplete. Designed in 1656 by Gian Cassini and Domenico Guglielmi, this was instrumental in discovering the anomalies of the Julian calendar and led to the creation of the leap year.

The church is in the main square of Bologna. The church is free to enter. You are expected to pay €2 to take photos. You must cover shoulders and legs. You are expected to do this in most churches in Tuscany as a sign of respect. The church is open from 8:30 to 13:30 pm and 15:00 to 18:30 pm everyday. Well worth a visit as you do not have to pay to enter.

Awesome statue. Not only by its cool looks, but as its located in the middle of the street, with its night ilumination it casts a huge shadow figure on the background stone wall, it's just amazing, gotta see it. There's also drinking water just beside it, although something quiet much common throughout all Italy indeed.

Master piece. The view is spectacular both at night and in the day light. The women figures have a different vibe as they are out of standards in their poses. One of my best sculptures I have seen in Italy. Many small restaurants and cafes around the fountain. The piazza next to it is a little bit empty that can have some sun umbrellas or shadow areas

You are certainly not gonna miss this fountain once you are in Bologna since it is located right in the biggest square Piazza Maggiore. I'm not gonna go into details how impressive it is since it was already mentioned in other reviews but we think this is such a nice place to hang out.

Next to Basilica di San Petronio... On Piazza Maggiori .... Amazing piece of art work. Sure you will not miss it... There are replica in other cities across the globe .. but this is a piece of art ... Nice...

An interesting game of illusion and perspective. According to the story, the client (the Pope) asked Giambologna to diminish Neptune's masculinity. This one did, BUT, he positioned Neptune's hand so that when viewed from the back at a certain angle, it shows his manhood in full force. The author's idea was realized to an even greater extent, albeit covertly and passively. An interesting piece of information from a time when many things were forbidden to say, but were said anyway. Cool.

Amazing statue, amazing city! According to a local saying, if you are a student and want to get into your university of choice, you have to walk two laps clockwise around the statue, and you shall get into the university.

After road tripping Italy from south to north, imitating countless statues while shooting silly photos, we finally came across one that my girlfriend didn't want to pose in front of 😂 so here's a regular, plain and boring video of just the fountain. Another gorgeous day in Bologna at the Fountain of Neptune. You won't miss it if you come down from Via dell'Indipendenza. Beautiful music being play in the area adds to the ambience. Come and marvel at this gorgeous work built in 1500s. You can also google the R-rated secret about a fountain. Giggle a little and have fun! (July 2022)

Fontana del Nettuno in the Piazza Maggiore in the centro storico of Bologna is a very pretty functioning fountain that occupies a small part of the piazza. It goes right there with the Mannekin Pis from Brussels, Belgium since the nymphs shoot water from their breasts! Truly though quite beautiful and worth a stop.

3 euros to visit the oldest anatomical theatre was worth every penny. Very cool experience. The wood carvings were beautiful and the marble operating table was a trip. They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to! Humbling experience to see the oldest university in the western world. Only takes about 30 minutes and well worth a stop.

Don't miss the opportunity to visit this incredibly historic and stunning university, which remains operational to this day. You'll be captivated by its beauty and rich heritage. The best part is, there's no need for a ticket, and it's not crowded at all. Make sure to check it out; it's definitely worth a visit!

Your visit to the palazzo housing the Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio will be on your mind for a long time. As soon as you enter, you're greeted with a great looking - and very symmetrical courtyard. Walking up and down hallways and stairways, you see murals, coats of arms and frescoes. The details are stunning. This was a highlight of my visit to Bologna.

Must see when you visit Bologna. Unfortunately you cant visit all of the library for the reason that people read and study there. Its still a library for students and not Disneyland. But the areas open to the public are impressive already.

It was all very impressive and beautiful. The entrance fee is 3€ and you get to see the anatomy theatre and the stabat mater room. The whole building is incredible. It is filled with 6000 coats of arms , painted ceilings and statues. The anatomy theatre has the marble table in the middle and wooden carvings on the ceiling and the walls and statues of 20 important doctors of the time. The stabat matter room is magnificent! The decorations are impressive and the books also! A must visit overall when in Bologna.

The oldest university in the world, absolutely stunning details. I definitely recommend the anatomy room, that leaves you wondering how such intricate, detailed pieces of art can be carved out of Wood. It is the worlds first anatomy study rooms, where the first medical students would study and dicest corpses.

For 3 euros you get to see a beautiful anatomical theatre built in the 17th century and a lovely old reading area and a small door where you can peak into the old classrooms. Highly recommended to visit this old university

We were so happy we booked a table for our first night in Bologna, it was a very wet Saturday night. When we arrived the restaurant was fully booked and buzzing. All our food was very tasty and the time between courses was perfect, the service was excellent. My husband made room for pudding and I had a digestive. We felt welcomed and looked after.

Really good traditional trattoria restaurant with excellent food. I had a mushroom suflet (pie) for starter which was absolutely lovely. Service was very good, professional and attentive. We managed to get a table at lunchtime but i reckon you really need to book as it was very busy. Price point is 3/5, we paid 93 euro for 4 person small lunch (see receipt picture). Overall a really great Italian experience in this traditional restaurant.

One of the best meals we had in Bologna. Got the Tris Bologna, which was not only super delicious. But also allows you to try the tortellini, lasagne, and tagliatelle all in one. Bologna on a plate!

An absolute must visit on this lovely city. Be kind, it's always crowded (best to reserve!) Delicious all the way around, not cheap but not outrageous either. Place is beautiful and I can't say enough about how authentic the food is! This is great, real Italian cuisine.

One of my favourite meals in Italy. The buratta and mushroom starter was very nicely done I've not had buratta like this before. And the main of rabbit in pancetta was delicious. Waited for a table and it was definitely worth it!

We came here as part of our food tour. They served up their trio of pasta which included the Bologna classics tortellini in broth, taglatelle a la ragú and lasagna. All of them tasted so good. It was real comfort food and I would love to eat them all again. We had tried some of these dishes in other restaurants, but Trattoria dal Biassanot was the best for us.

Was a cold snowy day. Came without a reservation. The staff was nice and this was by far our best experience in Bologna. Everything was top notch starting from the tortellini in beef broth which was super fatty and amazingly made to the rest of the dishes which were perfectly cooked and made. A decent desert and an overall great experience. Highly recommend .

We had an outstanding meal at Trattoria dal Biassanot. The portion for each dish was perfect. We shared their beef carpaccio, ossobuco and tasting of the famous 3 pastas (bolognese, lasagna, tortellini in broth). Everything was delicious. We ended the meal with the panna cotta and tiramisu, both were great too - personally preferred the panna cotta, it was creamy and sinful.

I found this place by chance, just walking around the Modena and at first glance it seems to be a good quality and in fact it is! Located in a calm alley, great service that helps with food and wine selection, nice small appetizer. Pasta, that I ordered was a little bit undercooked, but still delicious.

We had high expectations before calling to book a table for dinner. We arrived at 7 pm sharp and there was another couple. When we left a bit past 8 pm, it was full. It's okay. Not the best bolognese we tried in town but we enjoyed it. Feel fancy and upscale. The servers wear a bow tie. Probably won't be back.

This is a well known in place by local people. Restaurant ambiance was fabulous. We ordered mixed cheese and smoked beef as an appetisers. Both of them were ok. My wife ordered tortellini. It was okish. I ordered lasagna. I must say the best dish I have ever ate was lazagna and I tasted it here. It was really delicious. So I definitely recommend it. Tiramisu was really delicious. Lady who looked like the owner of the restaurant was kind to us even though she cannot speak English. On the other hand, waiter who took care of us was a little bit rude.

Had an amazing dinner here at Donatello. We went in right when they opened (didn’t have a booking) but were seated straight away. Would recommend booking if you can and going a bit later to get better atmosphere. Food was impeccable and good value for money.

No particular complaints about this restaurant although the vibe is a bit too staid and old-timey. The food is delicious, though I wouldn't say that the Bolognese dishes that we tried here were so special that they couldn't be found outside the heart of Bologna. Overall, a good experience but nothing to write home about.

So I came here alone at around 08.45 pm on a Saturday night without a reservation. The place was full, in spite of many tables that they have inside and several more in the corridor. Thankfully, I managed to get one at around 09.15 pm. I had learned their menu while waiting so I immidiately ordered the beef fillet with greenpepper sauce that cost 26 EUR. The service was quick enough that I didn't get bored waiting. The nice decoration and thousands of pictures of famous people did help. And came the dish. The fillet was fully covered in greenpepper sauce, served with raw vegetable and potato. The steak was done close to rare that when I cut it in half, quite a lot of myoglobin dripped on to the plate. The meat was very tender, enjoyable to chew. The sauce had a great balance of creamy, thick, and acid. This was my first time trying this dish and I liked it! I say it was worth the price, considering the nice place as well. Know that it can get very noisy when the restaurant is full as the table was a bit close to each other.

I got an instant good impression on arriving at Trattoria da Me and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is cozy and service was excellent, friendly and attentive. The crescentine with cured meats was amazing, I would definitely recommend ordering for a taste of Bologna. We also really enjoyed the slow cooked pork ribs and Bolognese schnitzel. We couldn’t fit in dessert but would love to go back one day. Highly recommended!

We visited here on our second evening in the city, having booked it beforehand, and it was exceptional. Whilst one of the more expensive meals we had, this was because we ordered a lot of very high quality food, including traditional ragu, bone marrow and ribs, along with some antipasto to start. All were exactly what traditional food in this region should taste like, according to my Italian partner (who was recommended it by a friend in the first instance). The service was also very attentive, so I would recommend it to anyone visiting the city looking for an authentic experience.

Being very close to our apartment, we were like to dine in this lovely restaurant which felt like home. Starting from serving the water in 24 bottles, Wine and food serving was very delicate. The appetizer of cheeses served with freshly fried breads, is a very tasty start. It is a must. Then enjoy your first and second course with different varieties of meals. It was totally a very memorable dinner. Thanks & will come again when in Bologna ❣️

If you want to taste the true Italian cusine in a true countryside Italian atmosphere, this is the place to go. The menu is perfectly balanced and expertly cooked, the wine selection is also great. Highly recommended!

Staff were very friendly, helpful and spoke good English. I had the slow cooked eggs and Grandma's veal, both of which were delicious. This is a restaurant to explore new flavour pairings made from great ingredients. Some of these flavours are subtle, do not expect lasagna!

Had a nice dinner here and a good bottle of wine. The menu sounded much better than the actual taste of the food. The fried chicken and egg gazpacho are appetizer that are not great for sharing. The service was good but since restaurant is overbooked it’s a very quick service and you can’t stay at table for over 1.5 hrs. They ask you to leave table.

Trattoria da Me has a growing, well deserved, reputation as offering an fresh modern take on Italian cuisine via locally sourced, dishes at a very fair price. LIKED: The food - it was delicious DISLIKED: Well, 'Disliked' is a bit strong, rather that there were things around the service which I found quite irritating - mostly, relating to our being non-Italians. From the moment we walked into da Me, we were made to feel 'wet behind the ears' starting with not being offered a menu in Italian to being told how to eat our food. The ravioli supposedly is better appreciated if eaten with a spoon and the main course needed to be sampled in a particular sequence! I am sure that the waiter thought he was being helpful but I felt he was being presumptive and superior. Also it is not a long menu and I wanted the green salad, which incredibly had run out. How does a restaurant allow itself to run out of lettuce is a reasonable question but the unapologetic answer 'it happens' was arrogant. Also I do not think it is right that the manager sat at the next table doing her accounts. As it is said, gaining a good reputation is hard earned and more easily lost. da Me deserves the reputation that it has. However there are also signs that the restaurant believes it is better than its customers - at least ones that come from overseas, if our experience is anything to go by.

It wasn’t worth the hype in our opinions. The food was a bit too over the top and nothing was notably delicious. The wait staff were very kind and friendly though and the environment is nice.

Had a reservation for 7:30pm and saw the lineup for this restaurant as I got there. Was seated shortly after but was told we had a 2hr dining limit on our table. Was not expecting this - especially in Italy. We wouldn't have exceeded the dining limit but I felt like I was back home in Canada at the onset of covid at restaurants where I was told I had a 2hr dining limit. As a result we wanted to quickly order so we would have ample time to enjoy our food. Had to follow up twice to get our server to take our order and another 2x for my drink to arrive. The 2 stars is purely for the food, the cured Meats with the fried bread was great and I'd recommend ordering. The tagliatelle ragu was average at best. The ravioli was great and reminded me of something you'd find at a fusion restaurant. If you're looking for an authentic experience, this restaurant is not it. Not only did I not enjoy being told we had a 2hr limit on our table, but we were rushed out and had to stand in a shared line (along with people waiting on their reservation) to pay our bill. Short staffed and a very rushed experience. I did not even feel like ordering dessert because of it. This experiece pales in comparison to all the other restaurants we've dined at in Italy on this month long trip. This restaurant seemed to only focus on turning tables vs the whole dining experience. I wished it wasn't my last dinner in Italy as it was really disappointing.

Particularly excellent food, with the service and ambiance to match. While plenty of people might feel that this isn't "traditional" Bolognese food, I'd say that they take typical Bolognese dishes and make small modern changes to make the whole dish straight up better. Lots of traditional spots in the city are doing the same dishes from 300 years ago... this place keeps the soul of those dishes but adds updates that improve the whole experience. Everything we had was perfect, with the Tiepido being a definite "don't miss" dish (the ravioli is filled with parmesan cream with an effect like a Chinese soup dumpling. Absolutely wonderful.) The Cottoletta Alla Bolognese was also a perfect example of the classic dish. Make reservations and don't miss this place, truly one of the best meals of our visit.

The cheese ice cream was a really unique and tasty dish. The cod fish tasted just fine, but the filling kept escaping the shell. The other dishes were very good.

We wanted to come here for lunch but the line wrapped around the block go get in. This is a very busy restaurant so be prepared to wait or go at an off peak time. We had a fantastic lasagna and tortellini in broth. Also, save room for the desserts, they are fantastic.

I had researched this venue prior to our visit, therefore I knew there was the possibility of a queue! The queue was well organized and a member of staff took our name and how many guests. We waited for around 30-40 minutes. It is a lovely restaurant with good atmosphere. The menu is on a blackboard , with the possibility of an English translation if required, vegetarian, vegan dishes are highlighted, and well catered for. We opted to have three dishes for the two of us to be able to experience more. Delightful pasta , most glad we had waited. There is also the opportunity to see the chefs at work. (The only reason I am not giving Five stars 🤩 is due to the service it was very mixed, both gentlemen were smiling and polite, however the three young girls did not smile at all, were rude, and one barked at us , What!, this level of service was not reserved for us unfortunately but for all.)

We visited this place based on all the amazing reviews online and weren’t disappointed at all. Didn’t book a table before visiting and there was no queue. However, we tend to travel outside of the main season and it was a weekday so factor that in. Our waiter was super helpful and helped us pick the food. That in itself was amazing!!! The menu had a good balance of local classics and seasonal items. The atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming as well. We spend €25 per person for everything.

Great experience at the restaurant. Fresh pasta all over the menu. They sell insane amounts of it so stock rotates and quality/freshness is accomplished. Queue is quite long at lunch time but they don’t close in the afternoon so, if you can afford to wait a bit, you’ll eventually get a table. Service is simply great. Location is formidable. Prices are good, around 10-12 for a pasta.

Amazing tagliatelle with ragu. Also really enjoyed the tortelloni with butter and sage. Worth the 30 minute wait but I probably would not wait an hour or longer as I've seen in some reviews. Fair prices and the food was delicious. However some dishes run out quickly and you don't get updated of this while lining up outside. The traditional dishes don't run out which is good.

Very good food and service. The tortellini with sage butter was amazing. The black gnocchi was interesting. Very good service. Came back a second time in a 3 day trip. They have exceptional food. Had the Buffalo mozzarella triangoli and it was incredible. The pesto risotto was a bit bitter. Everything about the place is amazing. Best food in bologna.

The best bolognese in Bologna. The Ragu was delicious, the burrata sauce with the pasta was amazing. The tortellini in parmigiano sauce was gorgeous and flavourful. A bit sad we couldn't try the tiramisu but the lemon curd dessert was very good. Possibly one of the best places in bologna to go for a meal to get an authentic experience without breaking the bank.

A great place for lunch, delicious pasta. Also it's cheap. 24€ for 2. The ambience is cool, too, it looks a bit like a vintage canteen (which we found quite charming). The only drawback was that it took them a long time to take the order after we had waited for some time outside.

Simple great and fresh food! Homemade pasta, plenty of choices, clean place, easy ordering options…fast. We should have this in New York. Very reasonably priced. Would comeback any day for a good meal with no thrills.

5 stars for the pasta: incredibly tasty and you can see it is homemade and fresh. They also sell the pasta in the store in case you want to take it home. The staff was nice and maybe the price was just a bit too high for the quantity of the food (between 10 to 14€ per dish). If you are going there, you should taste the typical dishes from the region like the tortellini in broth or the tagliatelle ragu.

The best place for freshly made pasta, especially tortellini and ravioli 🤩😍 During lunch hours you usually have to queue for the table (we waited 45 minutes) but it’s worth it. They have their classic menu as well as weekly one, and it’s always tasty (it was my 3rd time there). The portions are of good size, they include small salad or portion of seasonal veggies and a piece of bread in the price, which makes the meal really affordable. Definitely a must visit when in Bologna!

Best pasta I’ve ever had! Super fresh and delicious!! The price is very good and the system is funny how you write your own order down on a piece of paper. I liked it, it’s something new.

Just another overhyped, overrated restaurant. The food didn't impress me. It was bland and unflavored, or too salty. The servers are horrible. Always in a hurry. You have to beg them to get their attention. I ordered two identical dishes, and they forgot one. Everyone else finished their food, but no one ever came to check on us. I ate in another high rated restaurant for lunch, and it was way way better. Bad experience.

Beautiful restaurant serving authentic Neopolitan Pizza and other dishes. I had the Margherita pizza with a side of grilled vegetables which was courgettes and aubergine. The staff were very friendly and gave good attention and service. They have a spicy oil if you wish to add. It's not too spicy so I had to ask for crushed chilli peppers too. Would highly recommend to come and will be sure to visit next time in Bologna

The food was really good! I was surprised that they decorated the plate for a 10 Euro piece of their traditional Bologna lasagna. The menu has many different options, from pizzas and pastas to seafoods and salads. This place probably has something for you, no matter what you are in the mood for. The staff was quite attentive, as well, and you can pay by card!

Lasagne was better than I could have imagined and the pizzas were great also. No complains on the food. They fitted me in eventhough they were fully booked, and the service was friendly and helpful. Maybe there were variety in experience of staff, as some solved all the issues.

Food was great, pizzas, shrimps and pasta. Also wine, and beer were good but the service on time and timing were something to improve. Also the staff was interesting, the one helping did not take order nor did them serve you do it was confusing who is he one serving you. 4 people
