Arequipa

Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru, is known as "La Ciudad Blanca" or "The White City", because it is constructed almost entirely of white volcanic sillar rock mined from the surrounding mountains. The city is also known for its extreme weather: temperatures during the day can reach the high 60s, but nights are freezing. Arequipa is a base for exploring Colca Canyon and the surrounding villages, including the indigenous village of Chivay.
